Travel Statement
-
- Currently I'm no longer traveling. But, I've gotten married and my wife is also infected with the travel bug, so I don't expect this to last!
- In the past I've done quite a bit of extended travel. You can find my online journals (really Blogs, but from the days before blogs)
here.
- The documented travels include:
- The U.S. From April 11, 1997 through September 8th, 1997
My tours of the US, with slight detours into Canada and
Mexico.
- The World Started on September 8th, 1997 and
continued until July, 2001. Four and a half years, five continents, 75 countries, and almost 5,000 beers.
- Micronesia (again) June through August 2002. Covers how I recovered my girlfriend (now my wife) and
lost my appendix while traveling through the Central Pacific.

Freeware Packages

Windows CE
-
- The OnHiatus Software Project
- This is a collection of tools that I wrote while traveling
so far it includes:
- A.C.T.²
- A Character Tool. Basically an enhanced charmap app for Windows CE devices.
- Pike
a full featured icon editor for Windows CE.
- HiP Keys
a simple application to manage hotkey combinations on Windows CE H/PCs.
- Launch Pad
a tool for generating native launchers for Windows CE.
Mainly designed for PocketC and VB developers.
Provides custom icon and full tray support.
- Pocket Dial
- Pocket Dial is an app I wrote to retrieve and dial phone
numbers. It alows you to dial numbers through your H/PC's
speaker. There are lots of nifty features, and there's been
a lot of interest, try it and see what the excitement is about.
Steve
Miller co-authored this package with me.
- Pocket Dial is available from most Windows CE software
archives. Try HPC.net.
- Mute
- Mute is a small program that puts an icon in the
taskbar tray. Clicking on the icon toggles the sound
on / off. Anyone who adjusts the volume on their H/PC
to go to a meeting or class will find this indispencable.
- Mute is distributed in the Windows CE
PowerToys
package from
Microsoft.

Almost anything to do with Water
-
Rowing
-
-
I prefer sweep rowing, after all if God had meant
for us to scull we'd have four arms, right? My two favorite
Regattas are the San Diego Crew Classic and the Head of the
Charles. The HOC because of the history and the sheer
magnitude, the Crew Classic because it used to be my
backyard. (The second picture (above) is me rowing in the
Microsoft Crew at the Head of the Charles, October 1994.)
Allegiance:
- Lake Union Crew 2001 - Present
- Microsoft Crew Team 1992 - 1997 (via Moss Bay, SU, the Pocock Center, and Lake Washington RC)
- San Diego Rowing Club 1992

Swimming
-
-
When I was about five I was trying to learn to swim, but
just couldn't do it. One day the next door neighbor (who
was watching us kids) got fed up and threw me in.
I had the option of sinking or swimming and to my surprise I
chose to swim. (Thanks Marcie! Um, but you would have pulled me
out if I didn't, right?!?) I started swimming competitively
when I was in high school. By the time I graduated I
thought that I was bored with it, and it was time to try
something new (hence the rowing, above). Then August '94 I
injured my ankle and wasn't able to do my normal work
out, so I thought I'd try swimming again. Much to my surprise
I found I really loved it. Since then I've been swimming on and off with various teams and on my own.
The Ocean
-
-
I love the ocean. It is the single thing I miss every day now
that I live in Seattle. We have Puget Sound, but it's not
the same.
-
Favorite Ocean Activities:
- SCUBA diving
- Body Surfing
- Board Surfing
- Snorkeling / Free diving
-
Favorite Beach Activities:
- Just lying there
- Beach Combing
- Sand Volleyball
Sailing
-
-
I sail for fun. I've never done any racing (not that I'd be opposed
to it). I started sailing when I was 15. I started working on the
Argus, a 1907 topsail rigged ketch that was owned and
operated by the Boy Scouts of America as a floating camp. Since
then I've done some sailing on Hobbie cats, and a variety of sloops.
My old roommate owns a forty foot sloop, which is lots of fun, but my
heart still belongs to the wooden vessels of yesterday.
Water skiing
-
-
It's not surf, but it is fun. During the summer water skiing helps
me get my water fix. This helps me minimize those costly flights
to the beach.
The outdoors
-
Hiking
-
-
I love hiking. Every once in a while I get really fed up with the
world. Times like that the only thing to do is get away. It's
amazing what a couple of hours in the wilderness by myself can
do for my soul.
Camping
Biking
-
-
Ok, I really am not a big biker. But I do enjoy it on a summer
day. It's sort of like hiking, only faster and more social.
Usually at least once a summer a I go biking with a group of
friends. We load up our bikes with camping gear and catch a ferry
for the San Juan islands. The rest of the weekend is spent riding,
whale watching, eating, relaxing, and island hopping. The third
picture (above) is me enjoying my morning latte on one such trip,
(Hey I never said we roughed it!)
Skiing
-
-
Skiing is fun. Skiing is not my reason for living. To me skiing
has always been a consolation to get me through the winter. Of
course a lot of my friends think I'm mad, and I do get addicted
to the speed and the mountains, but I could really do without the
crowds.
